PRP stands for “Platelet Rich Plasma”. In this therapy, the patient’s own blood is taken and rotated in a machine for a specified time at a specific speed. This separates the different components of blood. The golden-colored liquid called plasma is taken and used for the treatment.
This plasma is rich in platelets. Platelets are the components in the blood responsible for stopping bleeding after an injury. They also contain growth factors like Platelet-derived growth factor, Fibroblast growth factor, Vascular endothelial growth factor, epidermal growth factor, transforming growth factor B, which after being released help in the healing of wounds. These growth factors help to reverse the hair thinning process, by stimulating the stem cells located in the hair follicles and creating a healthy local environment for the hairs to grow.
When done by a registered practitioner, PRP treatment is completely safe as it is autologous – meaning it uses your own blood and hence there are no chances of cross-infection or allergies.

The PRP can be directly injected into the required area for best results or it can also be combined with microneedling. At our clinic, we numb the scalp area to be treated with an anesthetic so that the procedure becomes practically painless.
It is an office procedure, usually taking around an hour to perform and the patients are free to leave the clinic.
In the initial phase of the treatment, we advise the patients to get PRP every 2-3 weeks. Once satisfactory results are achieved, maintenance sessions can be taken once in 6-12 months.
