Low-level light therapy (LLLT) has been used since the 1960s to treat various medical conditions such as alopecia, chronic ulcers, and chronic pain, headaches, musculoskeletal, and neuropathic pain without major side effects.
In 2007 and 2011, LLLT was approved by the FDA as a safe treatment for male and female pattern hair loss respectively.
Each of these applications is based on the biological effects of photobiomodulation in living organisms. Laser phototherapy is assumed to stimulate anagen re-entry in telogen hair follicles, prolong duration of anagen phase, increase the rates of proliferation in active anagen hair follicles and to prevent premature catagen development
Evidence shows that LLLT reverses follicular apoptosis (cell death), stopping hair loss and promoting hair regrowth. While mechanisms are still emerging, LLLT may increase anagen hairs through release of Nitric Oxide from Cytochrome C Oxidase. Nitric oxide causes release of various growth factors along with vasodilatation as well as reduction oxidative stress all of which promotes hair growth.
LLLT is most effective at treating hair loss in cases of androgenetic alopecia (male pattern and female pattern baldness). Mild to moderate cases of androgenetic alopecia tend to see better results than those severely afflicted. Individual results vary.
Studies have also found that the overall condition and strength of hair is restored in areas treated with LLLT. In addition to this, LLLT is beneficial to patients who may have undergone hair transplantation surgery, as it is known to speed up graft healing and improve the potency of hair grafts.
