Micropigmentation also referred to as dermatography is simply inserting pigment at an optimum level in the skin in a desired pattern.
The pigments used in the procedure are inert, non toxic and do not cause allergies. At our clinic we use only medical grade tattooing machine which differs from the conventional tattoo machine in being light weight and also allows precise depth of inserting the pigment.
The other method of micropigmentation is Microblading. Here special blades are used to make patterns with free hand strokes and infusing pigment in the skin. This is mostly used to mimic natural shape of eyebrows.
Who can benefit from micropigmentation?
- People with skin conditions like stable vitiligo, nevus depigmentosus, idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis, etc.
- Patients who have failed to respond to the medical line of treatment. For example – resistant cases of vitiligo.
- Patients not fit or unwilling to undergo corrective surgeries for their pigmentary disorder.
- Patients who need a quick fix for the defect before an important function in life or marriage.
- Working women, who need make up regularly but do not have the required time to do it daily. Eg. Lip makeup, eyeliner
- Patients with poor eyesight or unsteady hands who have trouble putting makeup themselves.
- Patients with light, thin or uneven eyebrows or who have lost eyebrow due to some accident or underlying disease.
- Artificial beauty spot (mole) creation.
- Scalp micropigmentation to fix thin and scanty look of hair or to boost hair transplant results as well.
- Correction of scars, stretch marks.
Is the procedure painful?
The procedure is not completely pain free but the pain can be reduced to a great extent by use of topical anesthetic creams and local anesthetic injections. Usually patients tolerate the procedure quite well.
Are there any side effects or adverse effects?
Micropigmentation is very safe procedure although there are certain untowardly effects, which include but are not limited to the list below.
- There can be immediate slight bruising, edema, which are temporary and heal within a few hours to days.
- Contact allergy to pigment which shows early in the post procedural period. These are mostly seen with red, yellow green, blue pigments.
- Infections – but these can be easily avoided by using sterile and disposable instruments.
- Blurring of pigment – usually seen in patients with very oily skin where touch up sessions can be done for longer lasting results.
- Existing skin disease can flare up. So patients have to discuss this issue with the doctor before hand if they have any active skin disease or have a history of any major skin problem.
How long do the results last?
The results last fairly long requiring touch up sessions only after 2-5 years.
