Periorbital Rejuvenation

There is a common saying – “Eyes are windows to the soul.” When we meet a person for the first time, it is the eyes we notice before anything else and it is the eyes, which helps us really connect with the person.

As the eyelid skin is the thinnest in the body, it is the periorbital area (area around the eyes), which is usually the first to show the signs of ageing in a person. Ageing eyes start to make the person appear more and more “tired.”

Periorbital rejuvenation deals with multiple problems arising around eyes and their complex relations with each other. Most common of these problems being:

  • Under-eye dark circles
  • Wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet, frown lines)
  • Laxity of skin
  • Tear trough deformity
  • Under-eye bags
  • Drooping of the upper eyelid
  • Drooping of eyebrows

A variety of surgical and non-surgical modalities exist to address these indications. In the modern aesthetic medicine practice more and more non-surgical modalities are available, which provide efficient and elegant solutions for the same. At roots clinic we employ the following modalities for periorbital rejuvenation:

Chemical peels – Chemicals like glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, lactic acid, Kojic acid, arginine HCl, Retinol complexes are applied to skin for specified period of time for the desired effect. Chemical peels usually improve the skin texture, discoloration, actinic keratosis and fine wrinkles according to the depth of the peel achieved.

Botulinum toxin injections – Dermal atrophy (volume loss of the deeper layers of skin) combined with repeated contractions of underlying muscles form Wrinkles (dynamic in early stages and later static), which is one of the first and most prominent signs of ageing.

Injection of small quantities of botulinum toxin into specific muscles temporarily causes localized muscle relaxation that smoothens the overlying skin and reduces wrinkles. Repeated regular injections of botulinum toxin can also prevent development of new wrinkles.

Crow’s feet and frown lines and drooping eyebrows can all be treated by this method for a more fresh and pleasant looking eyes.

Dermal Fillers – As a person ages, the volume under the skin is lost (more at certain points than the other). Also, as one ages the tissues under the skin move more and more downwards due to loss of support and gravitational force. These processes cause hollowing below the eyes, which makes the eyes look tired.

Dermal fillers are used to restore such volume loss. In modern aesthetic dermatology practice, the term “Dermal fillers” is synonymous with gel products made from Hyaluronic acid.

These are injected at specific depths to restore the lost volume and thus improve the overall appearance of the eyes.

LASERs – Mostly used to improve the static wrinkles along with tightening the skin. Carbon Dioxide (C02) Fractional Laser Resurfacing removes layers of skin tissue in a fractionated method (columns of skin are removed), leaving the skin surrounding each column intact to aid in healing. In this process of healing new skin is laid down thus reducing spots, wrinkles, pores, etc and improving the overall quality of skin drastically. Skin after healing feels fresh, tight, and bright with a more even skin tone.

Radiofrequency skin tightening – RF skin tightening is a non-invasive and non-ablative procedure for improving skin elasticity and tightening. The RF machine produces radiofrequency waves, which are carried to the deeper layers of skin where they get converted to heat energy. The heat produced in the tissues stimulates the skin to lay down new collagen, which improves the overall elasticity of the skin. Also, the blood flow and lymphatic drainage of the local area improves enhancing the overall tissue quality.
